Back Ground of Gavardhan Yatra
Govardhan also called to Giriraj Mountain descended its name from the Holy Goverdhan Hill. It extends up to 4 or 5 miles and has many sacred sites. Govardhan is located in Mathura district of Uttar Pradesh, 208km from Delhi. It is one of the main religious places of Mathura.
Lord Sri Krishna is associated with several religious places in Mathura and Vrindavan. It is said that Lord Krishna held Govardhan Hill on his little finger to save the town from wrath of the god of rains Indra. There are many temples in this town Haridev Mandir, Daan-Ghati Mandir and Mukharbind. The temple god is another form of Lord Krishna. The town is also famous for its 21 kilometre long Parikrama of the very old hill called Govardhan. The parikrama procession is held in very high religious belief.
The town also houses Manasi-Ganga, a close-ended lake. This is another pious place for the devotees visiting this town. On the banks of this lake, there are quite a few temples, one side of the lake shore now houses a regular marketplace.
One of the most important day in Goverdhan is Guru Poornima (Also called “Mudia Poono”). On this day, Millions of devotees come to Goverdhan for parikrama.
