Dr. Venugopal Ram Rao, Chairman Cardiac Sciences & HOD Department of Cardiothoracic & Vascular Surgery stated, “High blood pressure also known as Hypertension, is a life-threatening condition where blood pressure exceeds the normal range and affects millions of Indians. It is one of the major causes of disability and death all over the world which causes heart attacks, stroke-paralysis, kidney failures and other disorders, if ignored and untreated. In many cases, there are no symptoms until it causes complications such as heart attack and stroke. So, it is important to realize that you may have high blood pressure and the only way to find out is to get your blood pressure checked at regular intervals. India is on the brink of a cardiovascular disaster and needs urgent measures to control Blood Pressure levels.
High blood pressure brings on heart failure by causing left ventricular hypertophy, a thickening of the heart muscle that results in less effective muscle relaxation between heart beats. This makes it difficult for the heart to fill with enough blood to supply the body’s organs, especially during exercise, leading your body to hold onto fluids and your heart rate to increase. It is also estimated that hypertension is responsible for approximately 1.1 million deaths annually, accounting for nearly 11% of all deaths in India. More awareness is needed to ensure people who suffer from this condition are accurately diagnosed and know about available treatment options,” he further added.
Dr. Sunil Kumar Gupta, Head of Neuro-interventional surgery & Minimally Invasive Neurosurgery stated, “Hypertension is one of the important cause of Cerebro Vascular Accident (CVA) or stroke. Damage to the nervous systemhas long been known to be a common manifestation of Hypertension in the form of stroke or CVA. If we control our blood pressure in normal range then we can reduce the risk of stroke /CVA.
