Total Knee Replacement
When the knee is severely damaged by arthritis or injury, it is hard to perform even simple activities such as walking or climbing stairs. One may even begin to feel the pain while sitting or lying down. In this condition, you can consider total knee replacement surgery – regarded as the best pain-relieving option with reliable results.
Knee replacement surgery was first performed in 1968. Since then, improvements in surgical materials and techniques have greatly increased its effectiveness. Around 267,000 total knee replacements are performed annually in the US alone and a much larger number worldwide. Joint replacement is an extremely successful procedure in Orthopaedic Surgery today. Unlike hip replacements, where the head and neck of the femur are replaced by artificial parts, in the knee, the surgery involves only resurfacing the worn-out cartilage, exactly the way a worn-out tooth is resurfaced by the dentist using a cap and fixing it with cement. Present-day results are so smooth that undergoing the surgery is an easy task. As a result, knee replacement (total or partial) offers a definitive, almost complication-free outcome in skilled hands.
This is an endoscopic, stitch-less surgery only requiring half-day admission in the Hospital. You will be able to perform routine activities from day one of the surgery. In Osteoarthritis, Arthroscopy has a palliative rather than curative role. It can improve locking of the joint and helps even in case of acute exacerbation of pain due to degenerative meniscal tear. In certain cases of early arthritis, it works wonderfully well for some years.
The surgery is indicated in patients with a moderate-to-severe degree of pain but where the degeneration of joints is limited only to one part of the joint, which is stable with intact ligaments. But it is not suitable for obese/overweight patients. Arthroscopy is well accepted by patients because it requires a smaller skin cut, providing quick recovery and restoring the full range of knee movements. Patients can even sit on the floor and perform religious activities without any trouble.
